Circumstances of Loss Details

-----------------------------

The remains of slipped moorings are still in situ after the removal of a coal hulk. They are too heavy to raise.

Report from Lerwick Harbour Master, 15 June 1956.

Surveying Details

-----------------------------

16 March 1978. A coal hulk was moved and the moorings slipped causing an obstruction in a position bearing 117 degrees, 1200 metres from Loofa Baa beacon.

Report by the Harbour Master, Lerwick, 15 June 1956

21 May 1980. The site was not located during initial sounding. It probably still exists and hence the recommendation to retain as charted. Report by HMS HECLA.

16 September 1980. The site was examined on 13-14 June 1980 at 60 09 25.8N, 001 07 25.2W. The least echosounder depth was 12 in a general depth of 12.5 metres. The site apparently consists of 2 obstructions up to 30 metres long, protruding about 0.5 metre above the seabed and lying on an orientation of 135/315 degrees.

Report by HMS HECLA.

Hydrographic Office, 1995.

The location that is assigned to this record is essentially tentative, but falls within the ill-defined area of Lerwick Harbour (HU44SE 32: centred HU 47722 41345). This takes the form of an extensive roadstead which comprises the waters of Bressay Sound between the narrow Northern entrance (around HU 475 445) and the broader Southern entrance (around HU 483 400). The main facilities are to be found around HU 477 414, on the W side of the Sound; recent development extends Northwards from this point.

These features are apparently not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 16 March 2007.
