Circumstances of Loss Details

The HMS SCOTSTOUN vessel was the ex Anchor Line vessel, SS CALEDONIA, built in 1925. She taken over by the Admiralty and fitted out as an auxilliary cruiser. She was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine, U27, in the NW approaches.

1940. The vessel sank at 57 00 00N, 009 53 00W.The position given is 57 00 00N, 009 56 00W, in 1100 fathoms (2011 metres).

9 May 1991. The sinking position is given as 200 miles west of Inishtrahull in the Dictionary of Disaster at Sea. The sinking position is given as 57 00 00N, 009 57 00W in Axis Submarine Successes.

This plots in over 2000 metres.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably on account of its location far out to the West.
