Architecture Notes

NMRS REFERENCE:

Formerly contained a series of paintings on canvas in it's Billiard Room, painted for the Craig Browns by Cuadros whom Miss Craig Brown's grandfather in his journal (manuscript) first met in Bordighera.

Cuadros (who is thought to be Spanish) used the local people of Selkirk as models for the paintings which depict the Day of the Last Minstrel. They consist of at least two friezes and two stanze type lunettes. To me they looked Titianesque. Miss Craig Brown has a set of faded colour prints made from transparancies.

They were last seen three years ago but have now been taken down and are missing.

Thought to date from 1860s.

Cuadros is also though to have decorated two villas, 'Stoneyside' and 'Sunnybrae' and Walkerburn.
