The Object Name Book of the Ordnance Survey describes the 'Railway Hotel' as ' A licensed public house two stories high, with out offices and garden attached, the property of Mr Geo. Lockie'.

The Railway Hotel is situated on the E side of the B6398 road on the opposite the site of the railway station.
Built of sandstone post the opening of the Edinburgh to Hawick Branch Railway in 1847-48, it is of two storeys and was extended in 1878. Railway Court lies immediately to the rear.
