An archaeological survey of the Dumfries and Galloway Small Properties (Rockcliffe, Rough Island, and Venniehill) was conducted during April and May 2002. Murray’s Isles were added to the survey in April 2003. The survey confirmed the existence of known archaeological features previously recorded on the properties, as well as the presence of several previously unrecorded features, mainly associated with agriculture, predominantly stock control, and possible seasonal occupancy.

A wide diversity of monument types were recorded, including stock enclosures, land divisions and other comparatively modern features, together the fortified and high status Dark Age site of Mote of Mark.

Most features are in stable condition with little apparent threat.
