Following a period of historic building recording and a structural watching brief, an archaeological evaluation and subsequent excavation was undertaken on the former Kinauld Tannery in the suburb of Currie, Edinburgh, prior to development. The work initially involved an evaluation which exposed a number of features associated with an earlier phase of the mill's existence. It was therefore the decision of the local curator to undertake an excavation on the areas where these remains were uncovered. The mill originated as an 18th century paper mill and was used for this purpose before a stint as a glue and gelatine factory in the late 19th century. It then became a tannery in 1913 and remained so until 2010. Previous floor surfaces were exposed during the excavations, including machine floors, drains and the remains of two small ancillary wheel pits.
