Sallachan Point Beacon
Recorded as navigational marker as 6°42'N., 5°17'W.
Shown on 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps.
The Inverness Advertiser of 29th November 1864 reports a black masonry beacon erected.
The Scotsman 1st May 1906 reports colour changed from black top red and white horizontal stripes.
2nd February 1852, the Marquis of Stafford sailing from Liverpool to Macduff with a load of salt went ashore at Sallachan Point.
15th December 1874, the sloop Margaret carrying coal from Glasgow to Fort William sank, all hands lost.
Appears to be made of concrete and traces of red paint. Octagonal(?) with Eight tiers, bottom tier approximately 5 foot wide, 3 foot high and projects out 3 inches. If all tiers the same height then about 24 foot high with concrete ball on top which must be around 4 foot in diameter. The ball also shows traces of red paint.
The 'beacon' is not illuminated.
