A lead alloy button of 17th century type; the face is covered with a confused jumble of letters and numerals, the two sometimes indistinguishable as the mould cutter has inadvertently reversed some of the figures. Such objects were often used to profess political dissent or religious faith and the most likely interpretation of this object is that the legend is intended to be initials and a date.
Claimed as Treasure Trove case TT.166/09 and allocated to Elgin Museum.
