1857 linen works for Smieton & Co, one of the first factories designed, built and equipped by Robertson & Orchar, Wallace Foundry, Dundee. It had an obelisk as a chimney and weaving sheds driven from below. The two storey front calender shop has a dated cartouche in the centre, to be read from the railway, and a beam engine house to the East. Nearby Panmure Institute, with an Italianate tower, was funded by the paternalist and music-loving employers.

Information from Mark Watson, Historic Scotand, 22 May 2013.
