Air Ministry, circa 1938. Pre-war, Callendar-Hamilton aircraft hangars. Grid

elevations of framed corrugated sheet metal, painted black, supported by

raking struts. Framed, wheeled 2-leaf doors to gable ends with guide rails and eaves girder.

INTERIOR: supported by light steel framework of stanchions and roof

trusses of scissor brace construction. Glazed with single rows of anti-actinic glass.

Hangar 1 was re-clad in 1987-8 to serve as a display area for the Museum of Flight. Hangar II was re-roofed in 1987, currently serving as DAFS stores.

Hangar III was re-roofed in 1984-5 and is also used as DAFS stores.

The Hangars are listed as essential components of the airfield complex, each hangar is accompanied by a nearby barrel-vaulted Nissen Hut, nos 187/17, 188/33, 186/45 and 93/41.
