Nant dam provides the required storage capacity for the conventional high head hydro section of the Awe scheme. The dam is of mass gravity type with a fixed spillway. The dam is designed to prevent the loss of water out of the catchment over a separate watershed. The associated intake gatehouse is located further up the loch (see separate item). Water from the dam is used in a cascade running through Nant and Inverawe Power Stations (see separate items). Nant Dam is a reasonably standard example of a mass concrete gravity dam. The dam occupies a wide section of upper Glen Nant. It is of standard design and has no significant landscape contribution. PL Payne, 1988, 5; E Wood, 2002, 38; J Miller, 2002.
