This large (6 kilometre) horseshoe shaped tunnel takes water from the intake at Clatteringshaws (see separate record) through to the penstocks above Glenlee Powerhouse. The water is split in the tunnel near the join with the penstocks into two, before being conducted down the two pipes and into the turbines. During construction of the tunnel advanced techniques were used, including a rolling platform during the pouring of the sections and the mixing of the concrete in the tunnel. The pipeway appears to show no particular degree of technical innovation for its date. P L Payne, 1988, 24; E Wood, 2002, 50; G Hill, 1984.
