Surveying Details

The site's position is given as 57 43 00N, 001 49 00W.

15 September 1972. The wreck may be in 57 39 45N, 001 43 00W - 4 to 5 miles bearing 045 degrees Rattray Head. The vessel was owned at time of loss by CIE Royale Belgo-Argentine.

Hydrographic Office 1995.

(Classified as steel steamship, with cargo of scrap steel: former names cited as Ekkehard and Elsa Menzell, and date of loss as 13 November 1940). Anvers: this vessel was bombed by aircraft.

Registration: Antwerp. Built 1908. 4398grt. Length: 115m. Beam: 16m.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the unconfirmed location that is cited by both UKHO and Whittaker. This location lies in about 28m depth of water, and within an area where there several other wrecks are charted [PA]. The seabed evidently slopes towards the NE: no seabed type is indicated nearby.

The cause of loss (torpedo or bomb) cited by Whittaker differs between his two entries.

In the apparent absence of diver survey, remote sensing or specific evidence, the identity of this wreck remains unverified. It is presumably to be equated with that charted [Wk] on UKHO chart no. 115 (1978, revised 1993) at depth 37m, 4.8nm N of Rattray Head. This lies in a general depth of about 48m; a seabed of mixed rock, sand and shell is noted a short distance to the SSW.
