Fowlis Piper, Print PT 2892

The piper is described in ‘Old Faces, Old Places and Old Stories of Stirling’, Wm. Drysdale, 1898. He says it was originally on a gate pillar at Ballinton, home of the Napier family in the 17th century.

It was moved [1770?] to the bridge at the east of Thornhill, along with its companion drummer. They were pushed into the river, and the drummer destroyed. The piper, minus left leg, was built into the wall of the barn next to the bridge.

According to Stuart McCulloch (1995) this was later known as the ‘Piper’s House’, but the piper himself was moved to the Abercairney Estate [obviously before 1923]
