The Object Name Book of the Ordnance Survey describes the village as ' A considerable village in the North end of the parish of Temple having one principal street which extends from the United Presbyterian Church (NT36SW) on the North, to the Railway Bridge (NT36SW 191.01) at the South end. The houses are irregularly formed varying from one to three stories in height and are occupied by grocers and mechanics and labourers, the most part of the latter are employed at the different coal works adjoining the village.
