Guard room with cells situated at the E end of the stores complex (NT17NW 181.24) of the barracks (NT17NW 181.09).
Brick built with a slated roof, concrete lintels to the windows and doors. Windows also have iron bars on the outside.
Internally, offices each side of a W-E corridor leading to a further corridor at right angles where six cells are located.
Five of the prison cells are in use for storage, the sixth remains in original condition with cast iron door with peep hole and small opening section. Within the cell a single wooden bed with iron legs.
The building is presently in use as offices by the National Museum of Scotland.
