Mell Head [name: ND 339 761]

Island of Stroma [name: ND 35 77]

Pentland Firth [name centred ND 35 81].

Huna, N.B., 12th June. The ELIZABETH, of Montrose, Morgan, from Alloa to Oban, with coals, struck on the Skerry of Stroma, Pentland Frith [Firth], yesterday, and remains full of water, considerably damaged, with her keel broken, and likely to become a wreck.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 12,549, London, Thursday June 15 1854.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 9026).

The 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map notes Skerry [NAT] just off Mell Head, the S tip of the island of Stroma.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), possibly suggesting her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 28 September 2006.
