CLANSMAN, 271 ton, schooner rig steamer, master Malcolm Sinclair, of Glasgow. Bound from Oban to Glasgow. General cargo. About 100 persons saved. Lost 21 July 1869, 7.15am. Sanda Island about 1/2 mile north west of lighthouse. wind south, thick fog. Cause of wreck, thick fog. 'Struck on a reef of rock. The passengers were all landed on the island with their luggage & a number of sheep by the steamers own boats. At 5pm the CLANSMAN began to fill & the stern sank till the paddle boxes were nearly covered. She is likely to become a total wreck.'

Campbeltown, 21st July. The CLANSMAN (s), of Glasgow, is ashore on Sheep island: should the weather continue fine she will be got off without much damage.

Isle of Sanda, 21st July. The CLANSMAN (s), Sinclair, of and for Glasgow, from Stornoway, with a general cargo, which struck on this island this morning, has filled and settled down by the stern in deep water, and will probably be a total wreck: crew, passengers, and part of cargo saved.

Glasgow, 31st July. The CLANSMAN (s), from Stornoway to this place, which went ashore at Sheep island, 21st July, has parted abaft the foremast.

(Classified as iron, paddle steamship: with general cargo: date of loss cited as 20 July 1869). Clansman: this vessel was wrecked at the West end of Sanda. Capt. Sinclair.

Registration: Glasgow. Built 1855; rebuilt 1868. 4124 grt. Length: 59m. Beam: 8m.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The vessel apparently stranded on Sanda, rather than omn Sheep Island. Sanda Lighthouse (NR70SW 4) is at NR 72549 03715.

The date of loss cited in the primary account is preferred over that cited by Whittaker.
