NLO: Machir Bay [name centred NR 197 626]

Traigh Mhachir [name centred NR 203 630]

Kilchoman [name: NR 217 633].

Possibly on map sheet NR16SE.

Island of Islay, 18th Nov. 'The STELLA, Cafiero, from Sicily to Greenock, was driven on shore this morning in the Bay of Kilchoman. Crew and part of the cargo saved.'

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 7111, London, Friday November 27 1835.

NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 7120).

(Classified as brig, with cargo of wine (?): date of loss cited as 18 November 1835). Stella: this vessel was wrecked in Kilhomas [Kilchoman] Bay, Islay.

Registration: Palermo.

(Location of loss cited as N55 47.0 W6 28.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Kilhomas or Kilchoman Bay is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name presumably applies to the prominent and extensive Machir Bay which is set into the W coast of Islay, within the parish of Kilchoman. The settlement of Kilchoman lies nearby but inland, at NR 215 632.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 22 August 2005.
