NS56NE 1476 - Kelvin Way bridge

This iron carriage bridge was the second bridge to be built within the area of Kelvingrove Park (NS56NE 328), and was intended only to give access to the park. The foundation stone was laid on 2 October 1880, and it was opened the following year. In 1901 it was widened in timber in preparation for the Empire Exhibition of that year, and in 1913-14 it was demolished to make way for the present Kelvin Way Bridge (NS56NE 1476).

This bridge carried a roadway across the River Kelvin within the area of Kelvingrove Park (NS56NE 328) and to the NE of the Kelvingrove Museum (NS56NE 329). The river here forms the boundary between the parishes of Govan (to the N) and Glasgow (to the S).
