The basin was enlarged in 1841 due to an increase of traffic on the canal.

In 1841 the basin was enlarged, at the same time that a complete double line of locks was constructed.

The basin is clearly shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1865, sheet vi) and on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1896, sheet vi.NE).
