Standing Stones (NR)

Two upright stones measuring :-
(a) 3 1/2ft (1.1m) high and 12ins (0.3m) square.
(b) 4 1/2ft (1.4m) high, 18ins (0.45m) broad and 12ins (0.3m) thick.
Name Book 1866.
(Formerly classified as Standing Stones). Two cattle-rubbing stones are situated in pasture 150m and 300m respectively E of Leylodge School. The western stone is a red granite pillar, with a roughly square section and a rounded head, and measures 0.55m in breadth by 0.5m in thickness and 1.1m in height. A small drilled hole, measuring about 20mm in diameter and 30mm in depth, is visible 0.38m above ground-level on the E face of the stone. The eastern stone is another granite pillar and tapers upwards from the packing-stones visible around its base. Roughly square in section and with, it measures 0.5m in breadth by 0.45m in thickness at ground level and stands to a height of 1.45m.
The stones are first depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheet lxiv).
