A World War II military camp has been identified from wartime aerial photographs (RAF B309, 3398, 3.6.1941), to the S Inveraray on what is now the housing estate of Newtown.

Two camps which are part of a series of Combined Operations Commando training centres within the Inveraray area. Avenue camp, situated S of Newtown, is centred on a field at NN 0872 0752 and at least 50 huts, mainly of the Nissen y=type are visible on vertical air photographs taken in 1948 (CPE/Scot/364, frames 5186-5187, flown 25 April 1948).
