War Meml [NAT]

OS 1:10,560 map, 1968.

The mound known as Donald's Hillock, which is surmounted by the war memorial S of Hatton of Fintray, is probably a prehistoric barrow or cairn. It measures about 17.5m in diameter from NW to SE by 16m transversely and rises 2m in height within a retaining wall 1.1m high. Prior to the construction of the retaining wall after the First World war, the mound probably measured about 25m in diameter and 3m in height; it is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheet lxv).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 14 April 1999.
