ARCHITECT: T. Harold Hughes & D.S.R. Waugh 1938-9

Built on the site of Hillhead House. Classical form, reminiscent of the Pantheon. Round plan allows for maximum supervision by four staff. Seats 435 readers on ground floor and 130 in gallery. Originally intended to be at the centre of a quadrangle with clocktower (scheme unexecuted). Awarded the RIBA Architecture Bronze Medal 1950 for the best building in Scotland 1936-49.
