Demolition of the tower built here by the Crichtons was ordered in 1547, but a new L-plan house was probably built c. 1565. In 1632 ths passed to John, Lord Maitland, later second Earl and first Duke of Lauderdale. By 1639 he had remodelled the house, probably extending the N jamb to the W and adding a tower at the NE corner. In 1672 Lauderdale consulted Sir William Bruce about a major extension, and extensive building work was carried out in 1672-4. In 1733 Brunstane was bought by Lord Milton, who employed William Adam to rebuild the S range and make a new office court in 1735-44.
