Lime Kiln (disused) [NAT]

The following site has been identified while checking maps held by Grampian Regional Council. Full information is held in GRC SMR.

NJ 383 092. Remains of a lime kiln.

This well-preserved limekiln has been set against a slope 70m SW of Hillockhead farmstead (NJ30NE 14) and measures 3.2m in height and 4.9m in diameter over walls 0.8m thick; the bowl has been infilled. The drawhole on the SE measures 2.2m in width by 1.95m in height at the mouth and 2.4m in depth. Additional support for the outer face of the kiln has been provided by a boulder revetment measuring up to 2.4m in thickness on either side of the draw-hole.
