Craigmichael stands on the site of the steading of a croft depicted on Walker and Beattie's estate plan of 1838. The croft extended to just over 7 acres, and at that time the steading comprised a single building on the N side of a yard; it was occupied by James Cruickshank, a subtenant. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, sheet liv, 1869) depicts two buildings, both of which are still standing today.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 2 December 1997.

NMRS, D15001-15004/CN.

A sales brochure of 1932 provides particulars of a croft at Bograxie (lot 29, p.23) including details of the cottage and steading. The cottage comprised a kitchen, a pantry and four other rooms. The steading comprised a barn, a stable for two horses, a byre for twelve cattle, a turnip house, a cart shed, a fowl house and a pig-sty.

In 1932 the croft was let to Mr William and Mrs Moir; at that time the size of the croft was about 43 acres and its rent was £32 per annum.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 28 May 1998.
