For Fetternear House (NJ 7226 1722) and associated buildings, see NJ71NW 7.00.

Netherton of Fetternear, 19th century. Strong, single-storey U-plan steading, cartsheds to rear, with decorative brick voussoirs, and a fine two-storey barn of the mid 18th century with steeply-pitched roof, skewputs and chamfered openings. Conversion to offices, 1994.

I Shepherd 1994.

Walker and Beattie's estate plan of 1838 depicts the farmstead of Netherton as a four-sided courtyard with a narrow entrance on the S. A detached building, possibly a farmhouse, had been built immediately to the E of the court by the date of survey of the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, sheet lxiv, 1869). The building forming the S side of the courtyard had been demolished, a detached range built parallel to the N side and further buildings constructed to the NW before the date of survey of the 2nd edition of the map (sheet lxiv.NW, 1901). Netherton is no longer in use as a steading and has been completely refurbished for use as office accommodation.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 4 December 1997.
