Circumstances of Loss Details

-----------------------------

The HMS RIANT was lost in bad weather off the W coast of Scotland.

Source: World War II Shipping Loses.

Surveying Details

-----------------------------

28 February 1940. The Commander in Chief, Rosyth, cannot give any definite position, but approximates 56 40 30N, 005 50 30W.

Hydrographic Office 1995.

The map sheet assigned to this record is arbitrary and several widely-separated locations have been suggested for this loss of this vessel:

Larn and Larn: 'North Minch: off the West coast' [NC07NW 8001]

Hydrographic Office: 'Loch Sunart' [NM66SW 8002]

Baird: 'off Gigha' [NR54NE 8001]

Moir and Crawford: '3 miles NW of Gigha' [NR64NE 8003]

Whittaker: 'off Gigha' [NR64NE 8003].

It appears most probable that the vessel was lost off Gigha

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 15 March 2002.
