Glasgow and South Western Railway station situated on the main line to Ayr, SW of Thorn Brae in Johnstone.

Constructed in red sandstone with a main station house and extension to the SW on the up platform. The station house is two storey with a slated roof. At first and second floor level are string courses of consoles. To the SW of the station house is a single storey extension with a rounded turret like structure with windows at the SW end.

The station canopy in glass has been removed as has the up side waiting room which has been replaced with a modern glazed shelter. The up side building was originally a single storey wooden structure with canopy.

The station was opened in 1840 as Johnstone High and renamed Johnstone in 1962 after closure of Johnstone North station.

Visited by RCAHMS, 27 August 2004.
