This swing bridge, carrying the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway over the Forth and Clyde Canal, was designed and built by Sir William Arrol and Company. Weighing 416 tons, it was swung by hand-gear worked from a small platform on the side of the main girders.

Sir William Arrol and Co, 1909

This bridge is clearly marked on the Provisional Edition of the OS 1:10 560 map (1939) as carrying a spur of the railway line leading into the Singer Works.

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 1 August 2000.
