'A': NT 0645 5309; 'B': NT 0648 5311; 'C': NT 0652 5313 Shepherds' Cairns [NAT]

OS 6-inch map, 1961.

'A': This shelter on the western end of the summit of Darlees Rig comprises a semi-circular drystone structure measuring c 4.Sm by c 3m, with the wall c 0.3m wide and up to 0.9m vade. It is absent from the first edition OS map coverage of 1864, but indicated on the second edition of 1912 as a 'Shepherd's Cairn'.

'B' and 'C': Two of six 'shepherd's cairns' recorded by CFA in 1994 in the area (others recorded on NT05SE 6 and NT05SE 8 -10). They are composed of stacked piles of large stones measuring up to 2m across and 1m high. None is indicated on the first edition OS coverage of 1864, although some are present on the second edition OS coverage of 1912, suggesting that these monuments are of no great antiquity. Recorded during field investigation as part of an environmental assessment for a proposed windfarm site.
