Huntingtower Quarry (disused) [NAT]

OS 1:10,000 map, 1985

This large sandstone quarry is situated on the S side of Huntingtower village and appears to have been exploited mainly in the early- to mid-19th century. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire, sheet xcvii, 1866) depicts it as being in operation and having two roofed buildings, but the 2nd edition of the map (Perthshire, sheet xcvii.NE, 1901) depicts it as having gone out of use and become partly water-filled, only the more northerly building remaining roofed. More recently, the quarry has been used for land-fill; it was being capped with earth and landscaped on the date of visit.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, RJCM), 7 November 1995.
