Caves [NAT]
OS 1:10,000 map, 1985.
Two caves have been hewn out of the foot of a sandstone outcrop beside the sheep-pens to the SE of Newton Farm Cottage (NT01SE 58.02). That on the E measures 4.5m from NE to SW by 3.9m transversely and up to 2.4m high, and was used for domestic purposes; a vent for a stove-pipe issues from the front of the cave to the E of the entrance. The other cave measures 4.3m by 3.9m and up to 2.2m high, has a cobbled floor and has been used as a byre; raggles and beam-holes in the face of the rock outcrop at the front indicate that there was once an accompanying range of lean-to timber buildings. Both caves have well-fashioned entrances.
In 1792, the author of the Statistical Account described 'two caves, cut out of a freestone rock, fit to contain a number of cattle. But, when formed, or by whom, is beyond all memory. They are in a deep sequestered glen; and were probably made for shelter in troublseome times. They serve at present for offices to the farmhouse placed near them'.
Upslope, and to the E of the caves, there are a number of sandstone quarries. There is also an amorphous turf-covered mound in front of the main cave.
