NN92SW 25.18 91764 21993

Not to be confused with NN92SW 25.19 (estate gasworks at NN 91273 22533).

A shed situated in the policies of Abercairny House, in a hollow on the W bank of a burn 270m W of the Quarterbank saw-mill (NN92SW 25.09), marks the site of a gasworks depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire, sheet xcvi, 1867).

The shed incorporates the S and E walls of a truncated stone building with a flagged floor. This measures 4.55m from NNE to SSW by 3.1m transversely over walls 0.5m thick and 2.5m high, and a coped enclosure wall extends a further 4.3m to the N. The building has been modified to serve its present role by the addition of timber panels on its W and N sides. As shown on the OS map the gasworks comprises a building orientated E and W, with a circular gasholder immediately to the S. By the end of the 19th century (2nd edition map, sheet xcvi.SW, 1901) the gasholder had been replaced by a rectangular building, with which the existing structure appears to correspond.

Visited by RCAHMS (IF), 10 November 1995.
