Name: NH 7298 3464 - Rout of Moy (NAT) (A.D. 1746)

OS 6-inch map, 1900

The Earl of Loudon and his forces were routed here in 1746 by a local blacksmith, who, with a handful of men, gave Loudon the impression of a gathering of the clans.

ISSFC 1898

A watching brief was carried out on part of the battle site during groundbreaking works for a trackway, associated with a new windfarm in the area. The topsoil in the area consisted of around 0.3m of black/dark brown peaty silt overlying orange/red brown sandy gravel subsoil. Outcrops of bedrock and a large number of substantial boulders up to 1m in length were encountered, but no evidence of the battle was found.
