The site at Staosnaig was discovered by the Southern Hebrides Mesolithic Project in 1989, after a small field had been plouhged. Sampling of the site by test pitting indicated two flint concentrations. The flint at Staosnaig is not as dense as at Gleann Mor (NR25NW 10) or Bolsay Farm (NR25NW 44), and it is believed that the site is a palimpsest of small camping sites made by groups of hunters visiting Colonsay. Preservation is poor due to recent farming activity but the remnants of two Mesolithic fireplaces were found.
