In 1979 a hoard of coins was discovered during construction operations at Thurston Gardens; the greater part of the recovered coins came from the area of the discovery itself, but 53 of them were found in earth taken to Dunbar cement works.
D H Caldwell, J E L Murray and M Delme-Radcliffe 1983.
In all 259 coins, both English and Scottish, were recovered from a hoard deposited not before 1484, and possibly some years later. The hoard was claimed as treasure trove. 104 coins were distributed among the National Museum of Scotland (87), the Hunterian Museum (4) and the Ashmolean Museum (13); the remainder of the coins were returned to the finders.
Information from National Museums of Scotland (Dr D H Caldwell) 20 January 1991.
The coins were recovered by various finders, and are entered into the RMS under TT285. The English coins are of Edward III and of Henry V and VI; the Irish coins are of Edward IV.
Information from Dr J A Sheridan (NMS), March 1993.
