Friarton Quarries
(Whinstone) [NAT]
OS 1:10,000 map, 1994.
The modern Friarton quarry is operated by Wimpey Asphalt Ltd and the offices and processing plant are centred in the northern of two very large ongoing excavations (NO 1165 2126 & NO 1155 2107).
The original Friarton Quarry was a very much smaller operation centred on a working on the NE face of the hill (NO 1177 2137), opposite the Friarton Road railway bridge. This quarry was disused by 1902 (OS 6-inch map, Perthshire, 2nd edition, 1902, sheet xcviii.SW) and is now largely obscured by spoil from the modern quarries.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 11 December 1996.
