"Englishmen's Sike". The name commemorates the killing of Englishmen by the inhabitants of Galashiels in 1337.

RCAHMS 1957

English raiders returning south were slain, whilst eating wild plums, by local foresters at a place called the Englishmen's Syke, now marked by The Raid Stane.

W Rutherford 1930

The Galashiels burgh coat of arms and motto, "Soor Plooms", was derived from this skirmish.
