A chapel, commonly called Borthwick Chapel and said to have been dedicated to the Virgin Mary stood here before the Reformation. The old name of the parish was St Mary's. The graveyard is still in use. Remains of the chapel could be traced in 1834 (NSA 1845: A Hogg)

Name Book 1859

The district of Borthwick Water was divided, at an early period, among the parishes of Wilton, Hawick and Hassendean, and was served by a chapel mentioned since the early 14th century at Kirkborthwick, and situated at or near to the burial ground of Borthwick Wa's. After the re-establishment of the Presbyterian church in the late 17th century, only occasional services were held in this part of the parish.

Nothing now remains of this chapel. There is at least one late 17th century stone in the graveyard.
