(NS 7098 7610) Roman Altar found AD 1895 (NAT)

OS 1:25000 map (1969)

An altar to Silvanus, with a separate stone plinth, was ploughed up on Castle Hill in 1895, some 250 yds NE of the E gate of Bar Hill fort (NS77NW 8). Erected by Caristanius Iustianus, prefect of the Cohors I Hamiorum, it may have formed part of a small shrine, either on the Castle Hill itself, or beside the military way. It measures 3' x 1'6" x 10 1/2", and its inscription reads: (D)EO.SILV(ANO).(C)ARISTAN(IVS).(I)VSTIANV(S).PRAEF.(C)OH I HAM(IOR).V.S.S.L.M. It is in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow (Acc No: F 24).
