(NS 7818 1274) Font Stone (NR)

OS 6" map (1958)

Though sometimes called the "Font Stone", this is a cross-socket stone. It measures 3'6" x 3' x 1'5", with two rectangular oblong sockets, 4 1/2" apart, sunk on the top. The stone has been very roughly squared, and on the W side, beneath each mortice, a crude cross has been carved; their upper arms have been almost completely worn away.

RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912; Trans Dumfriesshire Galloway Natur Hist Antiq Soc 1893

This rough, weather-worn socket stone is as described. The sockets are shallow, and have weathered into one cavity.

Visited by OS (JLD) 7 July 1954

NS 7818 1274. No change. The stone stands at an inclined angle in a level pasture field.
