NS33NW 21 c. 32 37.

Shewalton Moor, where (1894), on the south side of the road and towards the NW part of the sandhills at Shewalton an ancient fireplace was discovered.

Excavation revealed a ring of stones built in the form of a shallow basin 2'-6' diameter. The basin was found to be filled with burnt sand, powdered wood charcoal and branches of trees in the form of charcoal. Mixed through the whole were minute fragments of bones. Below the stones and at a depth of 15" the sand was found to be lying in its natural position.

Probably used as a sacrificial altar...numerous fragments of urns are to be found all round the place, which seems to show that it had been built on a burial ground. The water worn stones showed little signs of having been roasted.

J Smith 1894.
