An RCAHMS photographic survey was undertaken, during October 1999, to capture Bunnahanhan Distillery as it was at that time. The Distillery remained in use, but with it's former 'grandeur' greatly reduced.
Visited by RCAHMS (MKO), July 1999.
The original owners of Bunnahabain Distillery, The Islay Distillery Company Ltd., 48 West Nile Street, Glasgow, had a pier erected at a cost of #3,500. Built upon massive iron piles, sunk deeply into solid rock, it extended 75 yards into Bunnahabhain Bay. The depth of the waters was such that loading and unloading could be performed at all times, from both sides of the pier.
The Southern wing was 4 storeys high. The ground floor was used for warehousing, the second and third were used as Malt Barns, the top storey being used as a Grain Loft. The Western wing was 3 storeys high, and contained a Cooperage, Coal Shed, Mill Room, Malt Deposit and Mash House. The Northern wing contained the Engine House, Boilers and Still House. The Company also provided a Reading Room and School Room. The children of employees received an Elementary education in the School Room. The annual output of Bunnahabhain Distillery was about 200,000 gallons.
