(NO 6675 5988) Dun Castle (NR) (Site of)

(NO 6670 5994) Gateway (NR)

OS 1/10,000 map, (1972)

There is no trace of Dun Castle, which belonged to the Erskines (Warden 1880-5). An ice-house at NO 6679 5990 is said to have been the vault of the castle (ONB 1858) but this can hardly be so as it is set on the sloping bank of a stream. The arched gateway is said to be of possibly early 16th century date (Jervise 1861), but appears to be post - 16th century It is 3.5 high, 5.0m long and 1.0m thick with ring moulding on the north side. The south side has been refaced.

Name Book 1858; A Jervise 1861; A J Warden 1880-5.
