The site lies on the W side of High Street just S of the junction with Applegate, and was excavated in January 1986 in advance of redevelopment. The ground sloped steeply down from E to W. At the E end, along the High Street, natural sand appeared on the surface. Further W was an early modern well, built of large round beach cobbles, unmortared, and an early modern cobble pavement. At the W end of the site was an old ground surface sealed by 1.4m of hill-wash and garden soil. Finds included medieval pottery and tobacco pipes.

D Bowler 1986.
