NO34NE 18 3967 4655

(Area: NO 397 466) At the site of the old mansion of Thornton is an armorial stone dated 1619.

A Jervise 1859.

The Castle of Thornton is a small building which has apparently been erected at different times. The older portion of the building bears two dates - 1531 and 1662.

A Jervise 1861.

NO 3967 4655. The alleged site of this castle was pointed out by the occupant of Thornton Cottage, who further stated that an armorial stone was removed from here to Glamis Castle. The foundations of a building exist here, but look more the walls of an old farmstead rather than a castle.

Visited by OS (J L D), 8 September 1958.

Previous OS field investigator confirmed. There is now little to see, the ruins being obscured by heavy undergrowth.

Visited by OS (W D J), 16 December 1969.
