This original section of canal through 'Oakfield moss' suffered damage to seventy yards of its banks during floods on 7 January 1805 and consequently it became necessary to dig a new line. The section was thus abandoned.

J Lindsay 1968.

Traces of this direct line that the canal originally followed across Oakfield Moss prior to the breach of 1805 can still be seen between NR 853894 and NR 850896.

RCAHMS 1992.
